My Kefir Journey

I attended a workshop all about Kefir with nutritionist Niamh Burke in Galway a couple of weeks ago. Kefir is a fermented drink, made with milk (you can use cows, goats and even coconut milk!) It is full of beneficial bacteria, and can give a major boost to your digestive system and your immune system.

I was interested in finding out more as I wanted to establish a routine which would help to build up health in my gut! I’m trying to tackle food intolerances, and IBS , and while a whole food diet is definitely making a massive difference..I wanted to take it up a notch and really make sure that I am helping to heal any damage that may be present.

The demonstration was great, really informative and Niamh even had some samples to taste. Kefir tastes kind of like a bitter natural yoghurt. Not bad, but probably better added in to something like a smoothie! She also showed us how to flavour it.

We also got some kefir cultures to start fermenting the drink at home. It is so easy!

10 days later, and I have managed to take the kefir most days! I am adding it to my morning porridge along with chia seeds, blueberries and honey. It actually gives the porridge a creamy consistency and is quite tasty!

I am finding it is helping my digestion, the first few days took some getting used to, especially as I generally don’t drink milk! The fermentation process means that the sugars that usually cause issues with milk’s digestion are actually broken down before consumption. So, the Kefir doesn’t seem to cause as many problems as milk does, however there is still the option of using goats or coconut milk. As my kefir strengthens (it takes a few days to get used to its new environment), my symptoms like mild stomach cramps are disappearing! We were advised to allow three weeks to get used to taking the kefir daily, as it can throw you into a bit of a detox…symptoms like headaches, tiredness etc. I actually find that I’m feeling good , so far anyways!

If you want more information on kefir you can contact Niamh Burke Nutrition , I am also taking part in a three week kefir group detox starting next Monday with Niamh and can’t wait to get started!
